Merriam-Webster defines crowdsourcing as the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people and especially from the online community rather than from traditional employees or suppliers.

Wendy’s recently brought their famous 80′s “Where’s the Beef” promotion back to life. For those of us that lived the first go-around of this promotion, just saying “Where’s the Beef” takes you back in time…a time when mullets were cool, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was the #1 album of the year and Ronald Reagan was our President. Here’s a link that will help you remember Clara Peller and her 3 VERY popular words of 1984.

Fast forward to 2012 and Wendy’s goal to promote their nostalgic “Where’s the Beef” campaign. One method they are using to accomplish this goal is crowdsourcing! They are using their Facebook fans and Wendy’s enthusiasts to create new, current “Where’s the Beef” t-shirts to be sold to benefit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. It’s actually a lot of fun to use their tools and their art to create your own t-shirt. Take 10 minutes or 2 hours (it can be addicting) to design yours.

This t-shirt was designed by none other than MJ2′s Creative Project Lead, Ashley Fithen. Not to worry, all of us at MJ2 will be sharing our designs next week, so stay tuned!

It can be seen where crowdsourcing may be what we did in the 90′s to be social, the change is currently happening where we are now crowdsourcing by our interests. Both Tumblr and Pinterest have seen rapid growth of people sharing, creating and enjoying content.

What “crowd” are you sourcing?

Are you ready to tweet, pin, connect, share, follow, blog, tumblr, flickr and the old time traditional way – watch, the Super Bowl? This Sunday’s SuperBowl XLVI in Indianapolis will be the first ever to feature a Social Media Command Center. If you didn’t think that social media had arrived with the recent news of a facebook IPO, think again. While the NFL and traditional media will be covering every possible angle of the game, the Super Bowl Social Media Command Center will provide information on just about anything else a fan visiting Indianapolis would want to know.

Here’s a few links that will help guide you… so get your laptop, ipad and/or mobile phone and be ready to go!

THE GAME

The Official Super Bowl NFL Page.

The Super Bowl and the city of Indianapolis want to provide an opportunity for a great “connected” customer experience.

Where to watch: NBC is your source online. 6:30PM EST is the estimated Kick-Off time. And on TV, well you know what they say, check your local listing. And the half-time show will be Madonna – here’s her rumored not yet released set list.

THE ADS

C’mon! As marketers (or just as a viewer) it’s all about the ads.

Mix the old (newspapers) with the new (interactive digital) and rate your favorite ad online with the USA Today Ad Meter and see the results on February 8 in the USAToday. Will you be picking the popular favorite?

View the ads now (or should I say, Pin) on the newest, hottest social platform – Pinterest.

THE FOODS

It’s all about the food! What’s your favorite? I’m thinking wings, but I have seen some great items on Pinterest the past few weeks! Of course the Food Network has a lot of recipes for you to choose.

And we definitely need a Coke and the Coke Polar Bears.

THE SOCIAL

Check out the online Super Bowl Party that was started FOUR years ago by ad agency Mullen, utilizing twitter as the primary tool – make sure to check out the Brand Bowl.

Follow, tweet, check-in, share, post….

Tweet it: @superbowl2012 or #SB46

Check the Super Bowl on Facebook.

Want to share some photos?

YouTube

Whether you decide you just want to sit down on the couch and eat some nachos, this Super Bowl will be remembered for the many ways that social media tools were used to connect a large viewing audience at one time. May the best team win. Enjoy the game.

As Facebook continues to evolve and make changes, MJ2 adapts, reviews, tests and makes changes as well. Since the most recent round of Facebook changes, implemented in late September, we updated our weekly blueprint posting guidelines and methodology around content management to improve placement and visibility. The results have worked quite well!

A quick glimpse into our content blueprint methodology:

40% of the time we are sharing relevant articles, photos, updates and other information that is relevant to that community

40% of the time we are posting engaging articles, photos, updates or blogs

20% of the time, we are promoting the business or cause of the page.

Our goal is to have a balanced array of information that our audience deems important or interesting enough to keep reading and participating within the Facebook community. Experts may agree or disagree with us on these percentages; however, with 13 managed communities with multiple Facebook pages, we are here to tell you…this works.

Wednesday’s success within the Face Forward Facebook community clearly demonstrates our methodology. Awards and accolades have been abundant on this page; however, the greatest gift we have received so far was yesterday, with the “sharing” of this photo…

Results (and this continues to change by the minute)…

143 Shares. That is 143 shares!

What does your page look like in the “share” category?
