Kindness, Animals and the Black Eyed Peas

by Megan James on February 19, 2010

Wondering what these three have in common? Hmmm, well, seems I had to come up with a random act of kindness by week’s end as per our challenge with Cramer and Random Kindness Week. My random act requires a little bit of disclosure. Tuesday night- at the Black Eyed Peas concert (Thank you Motorist Insurance for the suite), and met a lovely person, Melanie de Haan , who runs an organization called Shelter Outreach Services of Ohio (sosohio.org). She is a full-service veterinarian, who treats shelter animals of low income families by providing affordable veterinary care, and to help reduce the homeless pet population through spay/neuter programs. She works tirelessly day and night, and her stories that evening really moved me.

Now, I will be the first to tell you that I don’t really like pets. I grew up with a poodle named Jet, who never really was fully housetrained, and was just, strange. He was shipped off to some farm when we moved to California. The small abandoned house cat I took in while living in California seemed like a good idea, until my Mom pulled out of the driveway too fast one evening. Yep, roadkill. So, needless to say, I am not a huge pet person. (Yes, we do own a mutt named Beckam, but he is for the kids…). Anyway, I really don’t like to talk about people’s pets, their love for pets, or look at pictures of their pets. Whatever???

I digress. So, I found it funny in between Fergie acts that I stumbled upon Dr. de Haan and her selfless acts of kindness. She literally works her tail off (no pun intended…) Now SHE is randomly kind!

So, I contacted her, made a donation directly through her website, and told her I would blog about their organization. I fulfilled my criteria: totally random, somewhat kind, and I acted.
