Google+? Get the skinny.
Google search undergoes ‘most radical transformation ever’.
On Tuesday, January 10, Google announced an update called “Search, plus Your World”. This new feature update causes Google’s robots to utilize the data from its social network (Google+ profiles and business pages) along with the Internet information to deliver search results to people. It allows for personalized and social search and combines it into one seamless experience.
In the words of Paul Adams (formerly of Google and now at Facebook):
“We are moving away from a Web that connects documents together to a Web that connects people together…We are now seeing the things we have done socially for thousands of years move online. The emergence of the social Web is simply the our online world catching up with our offline world…The social Web will grow, become mainstream, and eventually simply be known as the Web”.
Google+ is making its presence known in Google search results.
You may be asking yourself, “Why do I need another free puppy (Google+)… I already have a Facebook page and twitter for my business”. Here’s why:
- Google Authority for Search
- Search Optimization
- Cross integration of all Google products
- Google +1 buttons
- Integration of social and web on one platform
- Share straight from your search results
How Google+ impacts your marketing.
To give you a quick idea of how impactful these updates are for marketing, consider this hypothetical example. Say you’re an IT software company, and you have a Google+ business page. Now with Google’s new updates, if someone looking for IT software and searched Google using the term ‘IT software,’ they might find your business’ Google+ page. And think about what would happen if you don’t have a Google+ page but your competitors do. Competitors: 1. You: 0.
Furthermore, if your IT software company has built up a large following on Google+, content that you’ve shared with your followers will also show up in those followers’ relevant Google.com searches, keeping your business top of mind and increasing its visibility among existing followers.
